GWANDA – A group of talented artists, who have been tirelessly flying the flag for Gwanda Town, are now calling on sponsors to support their craft and help take the town’s art scene to new heights.

To become a successful artist, one often requires sponsorship to transition from regional recognition to national visibility. To attract sponsors, artists must showcase their talent and sell themselves through their art, demonstrating a positive impact on the community that will draw supporters in numbers.

In an interview, a group of talented artists from Gwanda Town shared their insights on how sponsorship can be a game-changer in elevating the music industry in their hometown, unlocking new opportunities for growth and success.

Bright Nkala aka Bry-Eze, one of the well-known artists, said for now they needed sponsors more than promoters.

“The music industry in Gwanda Town is in dire need of sponsors who can provide vital support, rather than just event promoters. A sponsor can make all the difference by enabling artists to produce high-quality music, recorded in professional studios and mastered to perfection. They can also facilitate the creation of top-notch music videos that compete with global standards. Furthermore, a sponsor can help artists effectively market their music, expanding their reach and impact.

“While we appreciate the efforts of our promoters in Gwanda, who work tirelessly to host successful events, their focus is primarily on the event’s success rather than the quality and production of the content. If our promoters could shift their focus slightly towards sponsorship, I firmly believe that the music industry in Gwanda would reach new heights,” he emphasised.

Nkala further emphasised that in today’s digital age, having a strong online presence was crucial for success.

“Marketing our music online it is a game-changer these days, but we have a challenge now, many artists in Gwanda are struggling to navigate this digital landscape, missing out on valuable opportunities to showcase their talent and connect with a wider audience.

“One of the major challenges artists face is lacking the necessary knowledge to navigate the digital world. However, with the support of a sponsor, everything changes. A sponsor will not only provide financial backing but also ensure that their artists are well-educated on how to thrive in the digital landscape and are effectively marketed to reach a broader audience,” said Nkala.

Jazz Artist, Pamela Magariro aka Pamellah had this to say: “As artists, it is crucial that we get our act together, regardless of whether we are recording in a professional studio or a bedroom setup. Our music should have a clear message, a strong impact, and a unique punch.

“This is a business, and sponsors are investors who expect a return. They will not support someone who is not serious about their craft. Look at the big artists today – many of them started in humble bedroom studios, but their passion, dedication, and perseverance earned them recognition and sponsorship,” said Magariro.

She also added that artists needed workshops where they could learn more about what is music.

“Many of us artists are passionate about our craft, but lack the knowledge and guidance to turn our passion into a successful career. We need training and mentorship to learn the business side of the music industry.

“If we can access workshops and resources that teach us how to navigate the industry, take our careers seriously, and develop a professional mind-set, I believe we will be more attractive to sponsors and better equipped to succeed in the music industry,” she said.

She highlighted that lack of spaces and festivals destroys the talent in Gwanda.

“Gwanda’s music scene, particularly for genres like Jazz, seems to be facing some challenges. The lack of recognition and closed live music venues are significant hurdles for artists. Having annual festivals or summer festivals could be a great way to promote local talent, attract sponsors, and bring some vibrancy to the town,” Magariro said.

Kagiso wa Mmino a gospel artist from Gwanda said Gwanda seemed to be behind in music section.

“In Gwanda, we are facing a significant challenge, lack of support for music. As aspiring artists, we are eager to take our craft to the next level, but we need help.

“We are calling on individuals, organisations, and businesses who believe in the power of music to come forward and support us. We are seeking sponsors who can help us achieve our dreams of becoming successful artists. Your assistance would mean the world to us, and we are eager to collaborate and take the music scene in Gwanda to new heights,” he said.
