Harare, (New Ziana) – A lone elephant invaded Jumbo Shopping Complex in the Nyamhunga 2 high-density suburb of Kariba on Wednesday, seeking food.
The elephant emerged from nearby bushes, startling shoppers and sending them fleeing for safety.
“Within seconds, the shopping complex emptied as people sought cover,” said Peter Murwisi, a resident who fell and injured himself while escaping.
“As Kariba residents, we’re used to sharing our town with these massive mammals, but seeing an elephant in a residential area during broad daylight was something else.”
The elephant headed straight for waste bins, feasting on rotten vegetables and fruits. “It was like a scene from a movie, watching the jumbo maul cabbages and fruits,” said another resident, Mufaro Choto.
“The sight was terrifying.” Human, wildlife conflict in Kariba has escalated recently, with tragic incidents occurring. Last week, a man died after an elephant trampled him.
In 1989, two elephants stormed a beer garden in Mahombekombe, another high-density suburb, causing patrons to abandon their drinks.
Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, has noted that such encounters highlight the ongoing struggle between humans and wildlife in the town.
He emphasised the need for effective management strategies to minimise conflicts and protect both residents and animals. As Kariba continues to grow, balancing human development with wildlife conservation is becoming a tough challenge.
