Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police said on Monday at least 138 people died in 1 518 road accidents during the three week festive period from December 15, 2019 to January 6, 2020.

The number of deaths is down by three (3) compared to the same period in 2018-19 while the number of accidents recorded is down by 912 from 2 430.

A total of 565 people were injured in the accidents, down from 984 last year.

“Speeding, reversing errors, following too close, and inattention were recorded as the major cause of accidents,” police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

The high number of accidents called upon drivers to be “alert, observant and above all safety conscious,” he said.

He said during the period 169 people who were on the police wanted list were arrested while 2 836 vehicles were impounded for various defects and 2 383 touts arrested.

A total of 12 872 motorists were arrested for various traffic offences.
