A group of Beitbridge residents have formed a cycling club they hope will create
more time for interaction and provide a platform for discussion of other issues as well
as keep participants fit.
The Beitbridge Legends Cycling Group was created last week through the social
media Whatsapp platform and has its proposer Christopher Chimbarara currently
acting as the chairperson.
In an interview, Chimbarara said he thought of the idea after realising that most
people were driving and it was almost difficult for people to meet.
"People over 40 years and above in this town are driving and each just gets into their
cars and it is very difficult to meet, if we start cycling as a club we will create time to
meet and discuss several issues that concern us," he said.
"We need each other and we have had several cases of suicides where, I believe,
victims may have failed to find someone to share their problems with and took their
lives. These are some of the topics we will discuss when we ride out and meet. Cars
are not healthy in that we sit and rarely exercise," he said.
The group, formed after the 2023 Beitbridge Mayor's Half Marathon held last
Saturday, was also influenced by the event which attracted athletes from across the
country. At the time of going to the press the group had 80 participants.
All planned buying bicycle and hoped to create a cyclist event alongside Beitbridge
Mayor's Half Marathon.
Chimbarara said the group is already planning for its inaugural riding event.
"For those who have just joined us, this group is all about cycling. Let’s buy our
bicycles and exercise through cycling. Not everyone can afford to go to gymnastics,
but cycling can cover up that gap of exercising," he said in his welcome message to
new additions to the growing group.
"As time goes on, we can arrange our own races. We can also cycle to local
communities like Malala, Mtetengwe, Dumba, Lukange, Tshidikwa, Lutumba, Bubi,
Chikwarakwara, Dite etc for charity and braai out and even for one night camping
out," he said.
The group stays clear of political discussions and will not entertain hate speeches,
he explained.
