Gwanda, (New Ziana)-The Beitbridge and Plumtree border posts operated as normal on Monday, unaffected by an opposition call for anti-government protests, a senior government official said.
A splinter group of war veterans, and opposition activits called for countrywide marches against the government on Monday, to draw its attention to the rising cost of living.
The public across the country largely ignored the call, and instead stayed at home.
Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Everlyn Ndlovu said both border posts in the province were uninterrupted by the flopped opposition demonstrations.
“Borders, government departments and business is usual in Matabeleland South,” she said.
Beitbridge border post is Africa’s biggest and busiest port, and serves much of inland Africa.
Disruption at the border post would have enormous knock-on effects on the economies of many countries in sub-region.
