Boxer shines in SA

Share

GWANDA boxer, Monica Mnkandla (22), has proven her formidability and brilliance
in the ring after registering five professional wins, in South Africa, last week.
Going by the moniker “Savage”, the undefeated boxer did not have mercy on fellow
Zimbabwean Pamela Mutanga, during the featherweight, who she defeated during
the six round contest.
Mnkandlas flurry of punches saw the judges ruling in her favour, scoring 60-54, 58-
56 and 59-55.
She described the match as a flavour to her professional career.
The match was tough, but I am glad my hard work is bearing fruits on my side.
Since February, I have been working hard in the gym in order to secure victory. I am
happy that I have secured my fifth professional win without a loss.
I am preparing for the next bout, which is coming shortly. I will be facing a South-
African boxer, Melisa Miller," said an ecstatic Mnkandla.
Mnkandla is one of the female pugilists who are putting the country and Gwanda in
the limelight on the international map. Her victories are also statements on women
empowerment.
Her mother, Sithembiso Ndebele-Mnkandla, is delighted about Monicas progress.
I am very proud of her. She is utilising the space and dominating in this male-
dominated space. Monica loves challenges, that is why she chose this career and
she started it at a tender age. I wish her endless victories. I am certain she will break
records, said the proud mother.
Her fight against Mutanga was one of the bouts on the undercard of the African
Boxing Union (ABU) SADC lightweight of title match between Lancelot Moyo of
Zimbabwe and Kaine Fourie of South Africa. The event was organised by Unleashed
Combat Sport Events.
