The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has gazetted new licence fees for vendors as it moves to restore order and sanity in the city.

Recently, council gave all informal traders operating in non-designated vending bays a two week deadline to February 3 to register, a step partly meant to contain cholera.

BCC town clerk, Christopher Dube told informal traders recently that failure to register with the council would result in arrest and prosecution.

However, the ultimatum has since been extended to February 9 after consultations.

Dube, in a circular, said the registration fee for the Central Business District had been pegged at US$23 per year, and monthly rental fees at $11.50.

For those operating outside the Central Business District, the fees will be $11.50 per year for registration, and monthly rentals of $5.75.

“All illegal informal traders are warned and advised to move to designated sites no later than Friday, 9 February 2024. Registered informal traders who have abandoned their bays and/or are not paying the required Council fees are advised to return to their bays and regularise their operations,” Dube said.

“All persons conducting unauthorised informal trading on undesignated sites in the City of Bulawayo (on the streets, pavements, roadways), washing of cars, repairing of vehicles, illegal pickup points by private vehicles, commuter omnibuses and buses, delivery of farm produce and
other products onto the streets, pushcarts, heavy commercial vehicles into the Central Business District, illegal throwing and dumping of garbage or litter etc. are given up to Friday, 9 February 2024 to cease their Illegal activities.”
