GWERU – Police in the province has challenged businesspeople to be vigilant and not fall victim to criminals this festive season.
Speaking during a crime awareness meeting with businesspeople in Gweru recently, ZRP Officer Commanding Crime for Midlands, Assistant Commissioner Helena Mahonde said thefts, unlawful entries, stock theft, assaults and robberies increase because perpetrators capitalise on victims’ laxity.
Ass Comm Mahonde said it was more disturbing to note that the crimes are caused by neighbours, friends and relatives who operate behind the scenes.
“It is important to install CCTV cameras in our houses, shops, use screen doors, housing the key, use dogs and guards to identify and eliminate perpetrators,” she said.
Ass Comm said thieves are aware that people keep large sums of money during the festive season and therefore become a target.
“Over the years, we have tried to start by putting our best foot forward. Campaigning by way of emboldening target hardening and target removal techniques has been at the fore of police crime prevention initiatives,” she said.
Ass Comm Mahonde said their stations’ community relations liaison officers are always ready with information on prevention of crime.
“Please engage them, we urge everyone to take time to stop, listen and even participate in any way in the campaigns,” she said.
Officer commanding police Gweru District Chief Superintendent Leon Marongedze said the turnout by businesspeople to the meeting is a testament to the problems that they face in the community.
“Crimes such as burglary, theft, vandalism, fraud, cybercrime and robbery all threaten our businesses as they do not only lead to financial loss but also affect the well-being of our employees and customers,” he said.
