Harare, (New Ziana)-Debate on the Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill (CAB3) is drawing to a close in the National Assembly with Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi on Wednesday expected to respond to issues that legislators raised.

More than 140 Members of Parliament had by Tuesday this week contributed to the week-long debate on the proposed amendments to the Zimbabwe Constitution.

Ziyambi was also expected to bring the Attorney General, Virginia Mabhiza, as well as Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Kazembe Kazembe, to speak on term limits and delimitation, and other issues that were raised in one of the most debated Bills in the history of the country.

During the debate, most legislators supported the proposal to extend the electoral cycle from five to seven years, while other provisions, such as allowing traditional leaders to participate in politics and the repeal of the Gender Commission, generated mixed reactions, with many lawmakers, including from the ruling party, opposing the proposals.

The majority MPs also backed the proposal to move away from the election of the President by public vote the Parliamentary system where the National Assembly and Senate sit jointly to chose the Head of State.

After Ziyambi has responded to the issues that MPs raised, and the House votes to adopt the proposals, he is expected to move for the Bill to move to the Committee stage, where it will be debated clause by clause.
