Harare – One of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished aviators, Captain Charles Chikosi, has retired after an illustrious 43-year career in aviation, bringing to a close a remarkable journey that saw him accumulate more than 20,500 flying hours and mentor generations of aviation professionals.
Captain Chikosi completed his final flight as Pilot in Command on Wednesday when Fastjet flight FN8008 from Victoria Falls touched down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport at 1:15 pm.
His arrival was marked by a ceremonial water cannon salute, while fellow pilots, cabin crew and other Fastjet employees formed a guard of honour to celebrate his distinguished service to the aviation industry.
The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) paid tribute to Captain Chikosi, describing him as a consummate professional whose contribution had left a lasting impact on Zimbabwe’s aviation sector.
Captain Chikosi began his aviation career in 1983 as a Boeing 707 Flight Engineer before qualifying as a commercial pilot and assuming command of the flight deck at the age of 31.
During his career, he logged about 16,500 hours as a pilot, contributing to a total of 20,500 flying hours accumulated over more than four decades in aviation.
His career spanned a period of significant transformation in the aviation industry, during which he earned recognition for his professionalism, commitment to safety and dedication to mentoring younger pilots.
In a statement, ACZ said Captain Chikosi’s retirement marked the end of an era in Zimbabwean aviation.
“Today marked the emotional end of an era as Fastjet’s beloved Captain Charles Chikosi completed his final touchdown as Pilot in Command. We celebrate his remarkable dedication, unwavering professionalism and towering legacy in our skies, and wish him blue skies and smooth sailing in his well-deserved retirement,” the company said.
Captain Chikosi’s retirement has been widely celebrated by aviation stakeholders, with colleagues describing him as a respected leader whose calm demeanour, wealth of experience and passion for aviation inspired many throughout his career.
His legacy is expected to continue through the many pilots and aviation professionals he mentored during his decades of service to the industry.
