CCC in signatories crisis

Harare, June 21, 2023 (New Ziana) – Some aspiring parliamentary candidates for the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party in the upcoming general elections had to wait for many hours on Wednesday to file their nomination papers at the Harare magistrates court as signatories to their electoral documents were away at Town House where local government nominees were also registering to contest in the polls.

The process later proceeded smoothly with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Priscilla Chigumba in attendance to supervise the proceedings.

Observers have criticised the CCC for preaching what it does not practice as it claims to champion democracy and yet it does not have any structures except for a few officials who hold interim positions.

The party failed to conduct primary elections to select candidates, preferring an untested system of “community consensus” which members alleged was not transparent.

With Chamisa declaring that he had the final say in the selection of candidates, many aspiring members were left guessing whether they would be allowed to represent the party until the last minute.

Party supporters also complained that they did not know the people who were going to represent them despite the election dates drawing near.
