CCC tells MPs, councillors to stay put

Share

Most opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators and councillors will not quit their positions in solidarity with former leader Nelson Chamisa who exited the party last week, an official said on Wednesday.

In a statement, party spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi said the CCC’s elected representatives would stay put in parliament and councils for now while a way forward was being mapped.

So far, only Mt Pleasant constituency legislator, Fadzayi Mahere, and her Mutare Central counterpart, Brian James, have quit their positions in the national legislature in solidarity with Chamisa.

“CCC deployees in parliament and local authorities, activists, and members of the public are urged to remain patient until formal communication regarding the way forward is made and confirmed to be authentic,” Mkwananzi said.

Chamisa stepped down as party leader of the CCC last week, citing infiltration by political opponents trying to tear it apart from within.

This followed months long party leadership battles he has had with interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu which resulted in recalls of many CCC legislators from parliament.
