Health experts in Hwange are concerned with the continued rise of Malaria
cases in Hwange.
Speaking during Civil Protection Unit meeting, Hwange District medical
Officer Dr Fungai Musunami said they had activated surveillance system due to
the surge of Malaria cases.
“Since the beginning of the year, there has been an increase in incidences of
malaria cases, particularly from Lukhosi and Kamativi areas which are the most
affected areas
The doctor said there are a number of complicated cases saying more people
were being admitted at Lukhosi hospital.
“Lukhosi hospital has no capacity to admit Malaria patients and treat them.
Lukhosi hospital is incapacitated because its budget is only enough to feed
maternity patients,” she said.
Lukhosi has so far recorded 634 malaria cases, 548 of them being
uncomplicated and 86 of them complicated.
Meanwhile the doctor would want to see the nearby Five Miles hospital
upgraded to enable it to cater to the increasing numbers of malaria cases in
Hwange.
“We would want to admit our patients at the Five Miles hospital.”
Dr Musunami said so far the district was carrying out prevention awareness
campaigns mainly by spraying households.
“Through the years we have done well in controlling the disease and incidences
of malaria cases had significantly gone down because of indoor spraying.”

Villagers in Lukhosi area in Change ward as well as Nekabandama ward will
soon have their households sprayed in order to reduce malaria cases in Hwange
district.
