CHIWUNDURA – The Midlands Province is mourning the death of Chief Chiwundura of Gweru District, who passed away on Saturday after a long illness.

The late traditional leader, born Abedinico Tavengwa, was installed as Chief Chiwundura on February 12, 2026, by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Dr. Daniel Garwe, during a ceremony held at Gunde High School.

He became the fifth substantive chief to hold the Chiwundura traditional leadership title.

His death comes barely six months after his installation, and the province is now expected to begin the process of mourning and honouring a traditional leader who had only recently assumed his duties.

Burial arrangements were still being finalised at the time of publication by the family, in consultation with the Midlands Provincial Chiefs’ Council.

He is expected to be buried at his rural home in Chiwundura.

Further details on the burial programme are expected to be announced once consultations between the family and traditional leaders have concluded.
