Harare, (New Ziana) – In a bold step to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen the medical workforce, Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital is undergoing a transformative upgrade that will see it emerge as a fully-fledged training centre by next year.

In a statement released through the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) X handle on Thursday, the Government said the initiative, which is part of its broader strategy to decentralise health education and services, aims to boost the capacity of the hospital to deliver high-quality patient care, while training the next generation of doctors and health professionals.

“Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital is undergoing a significant transformation, with plans to upgrade the institution into a medical training centre. This initiative aims to enhance the hospital capacity to provide quality healthcare services while training medical students,” read part of the statement.

As part of the revamp, the government said the hospital will also receive a full suite of modern equipment to ensure all departments are fully operational and aligned with medical training standards, including diagnostic, surgical, and laboratory upgrades that will support both treatment and practical learning.

The move is expected to not only enhance the quality of healthcare services the hospital offers, but also improve the experience and outcomes for patients in Mashonaland West and beyond.

A major highlight of the upgrade is the establishment of a state-of-the-art Radio Oncology Centre, which will provide advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment, a facility being funded through revenue generated from the national sugar tax, a policy measure designed to promote healthier lifestyles while supporting public health initiatives.

The revamped centre is also expected to be a game-changer in the fight against cancer, bringing critical services closer to communities that previously had to travel long distances for specialised care.

Beginning next year, the hospital will begin training medical students in collaboration with local universities and colleges, in a program that will help ease the burden on central institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe, and provide a pipeline of well-trained medical professionals who are familiar with the challenges and needs of provincial health systems, said the government.

The development positions Chinhoyi as a key player in national efforts to address the ongoing shortage of healthcare workers and is part of a larger government plan to establish three decentralised health training centres across the country.

The Gweru Provincial Hospital and the Victoria Chitepo Hospital in Manicaland are also being restructured to offer similar training and healthcare services.
