CHIPINGE- Chipinge Town Council has embarked on massive water infrastructure
rehabilitation project aimed at increasing the town’s water supply to meet the fast growing
demand.
The current infrastructure is failing to adequately meet the town’s water demands as these were
put in place for a smaller population.
The upgrade work is part of a project carried out by council together with United Nations Office
for Project Services (UNOPS).
Chipinge Town Chairperson Lovemore Mukwapati said the project involved replacing pipes,
pressure reducing valves and pumps at the dam to increase water supply to meet the town’s
demand.
“We will be upgrading Bangazani Water Sytstem from the current 300mm pipes to 500mm pipes
in order to increase water supply to residents. We are also to procure and install two large pumps
at the dam,” he said.
Mukwapati said it was the town council’s wish to improve service delivery to the residents of
Chipinge with water, sewer reticulation, road construction and public lighting taking top priority
for the year.
“The local authority is making efforts to ensure that the entire town gets water. We would also
like to applaud the team effort shown by our partners in ensuring the provision of clean, safe
drinking water to our residents,” he said.
Meanwhile the town council received $712 million as its allocation of devolution funds for the
year 2023 which the council chairman said will be channeled towards the completion of projects
the authority has already embarked on.
“We intend to use the funds to ensure public lighting is in place as well as surface the
Makatapeya road. We also intend to make a number of procurements such as the purchase of a
grader and an ambulance for the town,” said Mukwapati.
