PHILANTHROPIST and business tycoon Wicknell Chivayo has pledged US$74,000 to the family of the late music icon and national hero Dr Oliver Mtukudzi, in a gesture commemorating what would have been the legendary musician’s 74th birthday.
In an announcement shared on social media, Chivayo said the cash gift would be distributed among Mtukudzi’s family members as a tribute to the late musician’s enduring legacy.
According to the announcement, Mtukudzi’s daughters—Selmor, Sandra, and Shamiso—will each receive US$15,000, while his widow, Daisy Mtukudzi, will receive US$29,000.
The total amount of US$74,000 was chosen to correspond with what would have been Mtukudzi’s 74th birthday.
Chivayo described the gesture as a way of honouring the late musician, whose music continues to resonate with audiences in Zimbabwe and beyond.
Mtukudzi, affectionately known as Tuku, died in January 2019 at the age of 66, after a distinguished career spanning decades.
He remains one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated musicians, with his contributions to the arts earning him international recognition and a lasting place in the country’s cultural history.
