    Couple in court for killing son

    A couple from Colleen Bawn in Gwanda District has appeared in court on allegations of killing their three-year-old son.

    The couple, from Mazera Mine in Colleen Bawn, faces a murder charge as defined in Section 47 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9.23.

    The parents punished the three year-old boy for licking empty fish tins.

    The couple appeared before Gwanda magistrate, Polite Dube-Banda, while Rose Phiri prosecuted.
    The accused persons in this case are the boy’s step father, Clifford Nsingo (26), and his biological mother, Bridgetti Ncube (21), who took turns to assault the child.

    According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the couple used switches, open hands and shoes to assault their son.

    It is the State’s case that on January 13. 2024 the husband and wife, respectively, took turns to assault their son, Mpumelelo Ncube, aged three with switches, open hands and shoes all over his body.

    It is alleged that the boy had licked empty fish tins and as a result of the assault, the boy sustained wounds all-over the body, fell down and died on spot,” prosecutor Phiri told the court.
    The couple will be back in the dock on January 29. 2024 for the continuation of trial.
