Covid-19 cases increase by 133

Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe logged 133 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, one of the highest single day infections since the outbreak started in March, taking the nationwide tally to 1 611.

In an update, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said of the new cases, 116 were local transmissions and 17 cases recorded among returnees from South Africa.

The confirmed cases have since been isolated, while 30 new recoveries were also recorded including 28 in Midlands Province and two in Mashonaland East Province.

“22 of the local cases are contacts of known confirmed cases, investigations are underway to establish the source of infection for the other 94 cases,” the Ministry said.

“Since the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak, on 20 March 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 1 611, recovered 472, active cases 1 114 and 25 deaths.”

The Ministry said total tests done to date nationwide stand at 101 375.

In terms of the overall breakdown of cases, Bulawayo is leading with 483, followed by Harare at 465, Matabeleland South 210 and Midlands at 145.

Zimbabwe is currently under level 2 of the nationwide lockdown meant to slow down the spread of Covid-19.

Government has since announced intention to re-tighten the Covid-19 regulations following the spike in locally transmitted cases.
