Harare, (New Ziana) – A drug trafficker caught as he casually walked across the Limpopo River from neighbouring South Africa with over US$1 000 worth of drugs has been jailed for an effective seven years.
Sithemile Chikamhi was convicted by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court for unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs in the border town after he was caught casually walking across the Old Bridge along Limpopo River on March 18, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
Chikamhi was stopped and searched by police officers that were on patrol during ‘Operation No to Cross Border Crimes’ as he carried two black travelling bags from South Africa.
The search revealed three compressed, shrink-wrapped parcels hidden among grocery items and clothing in his bags.
On opening the parcels, the officers discovered 13.716kg of mbanje valued at US$1 371.60. The NPAZ said this case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the country.
