Deliver on all election promises – ED tells Zanu PF

Share

Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Wednesday the ruling Zanu PF party must deliver on all promises it made in the 2018 general elections to win the trust and support of the electorate.

The President, who is the First Secretary and President of the ruling party, told a Politburo meeting that there was need for interventions in areas the party was lagging behind in fulfilling its election pledges.

This, he said, would give the party a solid campaign platform for the next polls due in three years.

Zanu PF not only took the presidency, but also romped to victory with a
two-thirds majority in the 2018 harmonised elections.

But the party, on the back of crippling economic challenges made worse
by consecutive droughts and continued western sanctions, has struggled
to improve the lives of the generality of Zimbabweans.

“Those targets, within the Manifesto, that are lagging behind, must be
highlighted and intervention strategies proffered,” President Mnangagwa said, stressing that his government was approaching the halfway mark of its current five-year mandate.

“The party must deliver on its promises.”

He said the party “should now begin to intensify our preparation” for the 2023 elections.

“The party cannot afford to be pre-occupied with sideshows and negative noises meant to cause despondency among our membership. The party should remain united and disciplined, with us members of the Politburo leading by example,” he said.

He said regime change proponents were unceasing in their efforts, urging members to be united and vigilant in defending both the party and government.

Turning to the food security situation, President Mnangagwa said government was working all-round to guarantee availability through imports and supply of subsidised mealie-meal.

“I call upon stakeholders to shun corruption in the distribution and sale of mealie-meal and other essential commodities.

President Mnangagwa also called for restraint on the part of manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers on increasing prices of basic commodities.

“Rest assured government is doing all that is possible to stabilise
the macro-economic fundamentals,” he said.
