Harare, (New Ziana) – The Federation of Organizations of Disabled People in Zimbabwe (FODPZ) has commended the government for its initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals with disabilities.
The organization’s executive director Leonard Marange made the commendation during a high-level interface meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Wednesday.
The gathering, which included leaders from the disability community and government officials, was aimed at addressing the challenges faced by people with disabilities and explore strategies for enhancing their inclusion in society.
Marange expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to
recognizing and treating people with disabilities as equals, saying this has been more pronounced under the reign of the Second Republic.
“We are grateful for the government in making our lives much better as people with disabilities are increasingly being recognized and treated as equals.
“This has been more pronounced since the 2nd republic took office which also saw the launch of the National Disability Policy in 2021,” he said.
He highlighted the ongoing Parliamentary debates on the Persons with Disabilities Bill as a significant step forward, expressing confidence that the legislation would soon be enacted into law.
The Bill, which seeks to strengthen the rights and protections of people with disabilities, has been hailed as a critical tool for ensuring inclusivity and addressing systemic barriers.
Marange emphasized the importance of its swift passage, stating that it would provide a legal framework to safeguard the dignity and opportunities of disabled individuals across the country.
In addition to legislative reforms, Marange called for economic empowerment initiatives tailored to the needs of people with disabilities.
He urged the government to facilitate access to loans for self-sustaining business ventures, particularly for those who lack collateral.
“We also want access to loans for self-sustaining business ventures where collateral is not asked for,” he said, adding this would enable individuals with disabilities to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
Marange also took the opportunity to highlight the need for increased representation of people with disabilities in decision-making processes.
He urged President Mnangagwa to ensure that the disability community isincluded in the formulation and implementation of policies that affect their lives.
Earlier, President Mnangagwa had reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting people with disabilities, as he he announced as ignificant government allocation of USD 1 000 each to 40 different organizations representing people with disabilities.
He said the funds are intended to support the initiation of income-generating projects that will improve the livelihoods of disabled individuals and their communities.
“This gesture is a testament to our unwavering dedication to ensuring that no one is left behind,” President Mnangagwa said.
The meeting called for sustained collaboration between the governmentand disability organizations.
