Bindura (Nehanda Guardian-New Ziana) – Jumbo Mine in Mazowe district, currently under care and maintenance, has of late become a haven of all illicit deals.

Drug peddling, assault, prostitution and murder cases are now common at the gold field.

Recently, a Chitungwiza woman was nabbed by police detectives selling marijuana there. Forty nine year old Hellen Chahwanda appeared before Bindura magistrate Ruramai Chitumbura on Tuesday facing unlawful possession or use of dangerous drugs charges as defined by Section 157(i) (a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chap 2:23.

According to Brighton Korera, who prosecuted her, on 26 October 2019, at around 13.20 hrs at Jumbo Mine, CID members heard that she was trading marijuana.

They apprehended her and found in possession of 42 packed sachets weighing 200grams.

She pleaded guilty to the charges.

Considering that she was a first time offender, Bindura magistrate Ruramai Chitumbura ordered her to pay ZWL$300 on or before 31 October 2019, failure of which she will do community service for 120hours at Rusunguko Primary School in St Mary’s.

Residents say social vices are increasing around the mine due to unemployment, and lack of income.
