ZVIMBA—Kawondera Primary School has brought the animals and environment module of the curriculum to life by transforming the walls of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) ablution block into a vibrant learning canvas.

No longer just an ablution block, it has become a living textbook for the young learners.

A winding river, painted in deep turquoise, sweeps across the front of the building, flowing from the boys’ side to the girls’ side and connecting them within a unified landscape.

Below, a large grey crocodile basks on a painted sandbank, its scales textured with thick paint so children can trace the ridges with their fingers.

A majestic elephant, painted in a grey shade, matches exactly what the pupils were learning to mix in their workbooks.

Near the doorway, a traditional wooden dugout canoe floats, painted in rich earth tones. It introduces children to local transport and heritage before they even step inside.

Last month, teachers asked the class to identify primary colours.

The curriculum required the infants to practice colouring animals. Now, instead of staring at a flat white page, the children stand outside with their sketchbooks, trying to match the specific shade of the crocodile’s belly or the dusty brown of the canoe.

A New Sense of Pride

The river of wonders has transformed the atmosphere of the rural school. Visiting the toilet block is no longer a chore, but an opportunity to visit an art gallery.

The local community, through the School Development Association, donated the paint. Older students helped teachers with the outlines, making it a true village effort.

Hygiene standards at the school have improved significantly, even though the structure is built in a Blair toilet format.

No one wants to leave a mess in the home of the great elephant or the grinning crocodile.
