Eight people died in a tragic road traffic accident early this morning along the Gokwe–Kwekwe Road the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.

The accident occurred at around 5am near the 110-kilometre peg towards Kwekwe, when a Trip-Trans bus with 36 passengers collided with a haulage truck. Police say the bus was attempting to overtake resulting in a head-on collision.

The victims died at the scene, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities. The bodies of the deceased have since been taken for post-mortem examinations. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly during overtaking and early morning travel when visibility is often reduced.

The latest accident adds to a series of recent fatal road crashes across Zimbabwe, heightening concern over increasing road carnage on major highways.

Earlier this week, six people died in a crash along the Harare–Bulawayo Highway, in an accident involving multiple vehicles under circumstances linked to speeding and risky driving.

In another recent incident in Hwange, eight members of a Catholic church charismatic group were killed in a road traffic accident while travelling together, a tragedy that shocked the local religious community.

Authorities have since intensified calls for road discipline, warning that speeding, fatigue, and dangerous overtaking continue to be major contributing factors in fatal highway crashes.
