MASVINGO – An escaped convict who was shot and recaptured by police in Renco has appeared in court facing four fresh charges, including three counts of armed robbery allegedly committed while he was on the run.
James Masunda (34), who was serving a 27-year jail term for armed robbery at Mutimurefu Prison, was arrested last Friday after allegedly escaping with fellow convict Tafadzwa Janyure Zimirenyika.
Masunda was shot twice in one leg by police detectives during his arrest and is currently being held at Mutimurefu Prison Hospital.
He appeared before Masvingo magistrate Archie Wochiunga, who remanded him in custody. He now faces one count of escaping from lawful custody and three counts of armed robbery.
The court heard that shortly after escaping from prison, Masunda and Janyure allegedly targeted the Zigwi tuck-shop in Chikwanda Village, where they reportedly took US$20, foodstuffs, and a pair of jeans.
Later that evening, the two allegedly raided the homestead of Medlyn Mudzingwa in Chikwanda Village, under Chief Chikwanda.
Prosecutors allege that the pair, armed with a machete and a knife, forced Mudzingwa into her bedroom and demanded cash.
They allegedly searched the room before getting away with US$173, a black satchel, a pair of jeans, and a brown polo neck sweater.
About 30 minutes later, the alleged robbers reportedly targeted Jacob Moyo’s homestead in Gonovhi Village, also under Chief Chikwanda.
The court heard that the two used a sharp object to break into Moyo’s bedroom and demand money.
After Moyo told them he had no cash, the pair allegedly took his white Toyota Vitz, registration number ADD 2232, and fled.
Villagers reportedly pursued the suspects, who abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot.
Police later arrested Masunda in Renco, while Janyure remains at large.

The latest charges are in addition to the armed robbery conviction for which Masunda was already serving his 27-year sentence.
