CHINHOYI – The atmosphere at Chinhoyi Stadium during the Northern Region Division One League midweek encounter was electric, the tension so thick it could be cut with a blade.
FC Oden knew that hosting Black Rhinos would be no walk in the park, and from the opening whistle, the match lived up to its billing as a physical, gruelling contest.
The opening 45 minutes were a masterclass in defensive discipline.
The visitors, Chauya Chipembere, lived up to their reputation—charging into every 50-50 challenge and clogging the midfield.
FC Oden, under coach Arthur Tutani, struggled to find their rhythm as their creative playmakers were constantly closed down.
Despite a few half-chances from distance, neither side could find a clinical edge.
When the referee blew for half-time, the scoreboard remained stubbornly locked up without a goal.
The home team, also known as Masmall, saw their fans grow restless as players looked battered.
The second half saw FC Oden emerge with renewed intensity after introducing two substitutes: Leeroy Karuru and former Black Rhinos striker Everson Feremba. They began to stretch the pitch, using the wings to bypass Rhinos’ dense central block.
In the 68th minute, the deadlock was finally broken after a series of patient passes led to a corner kick. Oden’s right-back overlapped to take it, played a quick one-two, and whipped a tantalising, curling cross into the heart of the penalty area.
Rising above two towering Rhinos defenders, an FC Oden striker met the ball with a thunderous header that flew past the outstretched visitors’ goalkeeper.
The stadium erupted as the home side grabbed the lead they so desperately craved.
The final twenty minutes were a true test of nerves.
The Nesbert Saruchera-coached Black Rhinos threw caution to the wind, pushing their big men forward and launching a relentless aerial assault.
This was the moment when FC Oden’s goalkeeper transformed from a spectator into a hero.
In the 79th minute, a snapshot by a Rhinos midfielder from the edge of the box seemed destined for the bottom corner until a fingertip save turned it around the post.
Rhinos returned down the same flank in the 82nd minute, unleashing a powerful strike that was parried away with lightning reflexes. The FC Oden goalkeeper then went down—much to the concern of spectators—not from injury, but to buy precious seconds.
In the dying seconds of extra time, the home team’s goalkeeper bravely smothered a one-on-one effort at the feet of the onrushing striker.
When the final whistle finally blew, the score remained 1-0.
It was not the prettiest win, but for FC Oden, those three points—earned through grit, a perfect header, and a world-class performance between the sticks—felt like gold.
