Finally sports for Domboshawa

Share

At long last Domboshawa, a fast-growing district just outside Harare, might be featuring in league sport this year.

Although there is hardly any sporting infrastructure in the peri-urban settlement, which has denied it a place in any of the country’s national or provincial competitions, the game of volleyball which can make do with a basic court, might finally bring home some entertainment.

Domboshawa will be fielding a professional team in the Mashonaland East Volleyball Association (MEVA) League this year.

Patron of Red Rock Volleyball Club, based in Domboshawa, Dennis Chiparausha, said the new club will hold trials for aspiring players at Makumbe Mission on Saturday January 13.

“This will give an opportunity for volleyball players to showcase their talents, taking them away from the street and drug abuse and taking away idleness from the youths,” Chiparausha told New Ziana.

“We have trials this coming Saturday from 9am at Visitation Makumbi Volleyball Courts to recruit players.”

He added that the club would expand in the short term to cater for a women’s side.

“For trials the focus is on senior men. That is 15 years and above though the plan for the club is to recruit players from primary school to senior men as well as ladies.”

A private school in Domboshawa recently announced plans to construct the first Olympic-size pool in the locality.

Other than that prospect, there are no sports played competitively in Domboshawa which does not have certified football let alone rugby or cricket grounds, not basketball and tennis courts.

Chiparausha retired as a volleyball player in 2022 after a colourful career which began in Rushinga and later took him to the Zimbabwe Premier Volleyball League.

He captained Mashonaland Central Select while turning out for big teams such as Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) and Mwana Africa.

He played different positions including setter, CB, attacker and power hitter. He also moved to Harare to join first Jewels then Yadah but continued to be called by Mashonaland Central in provincial championships.

Later he coached at Ruwa volleyball club.
“With the passion (I have) for volleyball, it is my dream to see volleyball played in Domboshawa, hence the idea of forming a club for the community.

“I am working with former Volleyball players, high school and primary school teachers and coaches to build Volleyball in Domboshawa,” said Chiparausha.

The process kick-started with the Domboshawa Volleyball Tournament for men’s and women’s teams held at Makumbi on December 9, last month.

Six senior men’s and two senior women’s teams participated as well as two Under-15 boys’ teams.
