Vumba (Pungwe News-New Ziana) – A Mutare fisherman drowned in Zonwe dam recently while trying to retrieve his fishing rod which had been pulled away by a fish.

Manicaland province police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa identified the deceased as Tengeni Kanyumbo (76) of Vumba.

On the fateful day, Kakohwa said Kanyumbo and his friend Shumba Chingoni (67) went to Zonwe dam to fish.

“When they arrived, the two set up their fishing rods at the edge of the dam and relaxed. After a while, a fish was caught and began dragging Kanyumbo`s rod 50 metres into the dam,” Kakohwa said.

Upon realising this, Kanyumbo undressed and jumped into the dam to collect his rod but unfortunately he drowned.

Chingoni rushed home and advised others about what had transpired. They made a report to Mutare Rural police who called Changadzi Support Unit Sub Aqua Unit.

The body was retrieved and no visible injuries were noticed to suggest foul play.

“As police, we advise members of the public not to play close to water bodies especially during (the) rain season as they risk being swept away,” Kakohwa said.
