Masvingo (New Ziana) – Five people died, and 16 others injured when two vehicles collided head on along the Masvingo-Mutare road on Tuesday, police have said.
The accident happened near the Lothian tollgate and involved a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Hiace.
In a statement, police said both the bodies of the deceased, and the injured were taken to Masvingo General Hospital.
“The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 14 February 2023 at around 1610 hours at the 254km peg along Mutare-Masvingo Road in which five people died while 16 others were injured,” police said.
“A Toyota Hilux vehicle travelling towards Masvingo with three passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Toyota Hiace kombi, travelling in the opposite direction with 17 passengers on board.”
Road accidents are increasingly becoming a common occurrence in the country, with police attributing most of these to driver recklessness, including drunken driving.
