Harare, (New Ziana) -Former British ambassador to Zimbabwe Peter Vowles, whose tour of duty ended this month, has been appointed as High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a statement on Monday, the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said Vowels, who will be replacing Dr Richard Montgomery, will take up his appointment during September this year.

When Vowels who took up his position as British ambassador to Zimbabwe in 2023, it was not his first to stay in the country as  he had previously been there country as a young man in 1992, working as a teacher in rural Mudzi, Mashonaland East province until 1993.

He later went back to Zimbabwe as the country Policy and Programme Manager for the Students Partnership Worldwide.

Vowels bid farewell to President Emmerson Mnangagwa on June 5 this year, during which he congratulated Zimbabwe on being voted into the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, a development he said presented a great opportunity for the country to amplify the voice of Africa on many critical global issues.

He further said the thawing of relations between Harare and London was an indication of the shared desire of the two nations to strengthen diplomatic ties despite the disagreements of the past, adding London remains open for further dialogue with Harare on issues of mutual interest and cooperation.

Vowles also expressed his gratitude to the people of Zimbabwe for their warmth and hospitality over the many years that he has been in and out of the country, serving in various capacities.
