Beitbridge – Soaring fuel prices in Zimbabwe have pushed truck drivers to refuel across the border in South Africa, creating shortages at filling stations in Musina.

Long distance transporters are now filling their tanks and carrying extra fuel from South Africa to cut costs. One driver, speaking anonymously, said, “I’m heading to Zambia, but I can’t afford to fill up in Zimbabwe. I fuel up in South Africa and carry extra for the trip.”

The growing demand has left many service stations in Musina struggling to keep up. “We are only reserving fuel for South African registered vehicles. Please check again next week,” said one attendant.

While petrol and diesel remain cheaper in South Africa, prices have slightly increased in recent weeks due to global tensions, including the Iran-Israel conflict.

The shortages have also affected informal fuel traders, who reported supply challenges last week. Meanwhile, many Zimbabwean residents are increasingly turning to informal vendors as official fuel prices continue to rise beyond reach.

The cross border fuel demand is now placing growing pressure on supply in border towns, raising concerns over sustainability.
