GOKWE – The 80km Gokwe-Masoro-Empress-Copper Queen Road rehabilitation programme is expected to be completed in two weeks and pave way for improved transportation between Gokwe South and Gokwe North communities.

The difficulties used to be endured by road users and communities connecting Gokwe South and Gokwe North is expected to be a thing of the past soon.

An assessment tour by government officials revealed that the road is an alternative to the Kadoma-Sanyati Road, which became the only road connection following the collapse of Sesame Bridge by flash floods late last year.

The completion of the 80km dirt road is expected to improve production, social life and the economy for the local people.

Motorists and other road users welcomed the development saying the gesture will make mobility and accessibility much easier.

“This road was not easy to travel on as it caused damages to our vehicles thereby increasing service costs,” Timothy Dhlana from Gwehava said.

He said with the rehabilitation of the road expected to finish soon, it would be easier to travel.

“It will take a few minutes to travel from here to Gokwe North,” he said.

Edson Mavhoti applauded the development as it will make movement effective.

“We had a transport crisis as public buses had shunned this route but this will be a thing of the past. The few transporters plying the route were charging exorbitant fares,” he said.

Apart from social connectivity and improved transport services, the road is expected to boost trade in both Gokwe North and Gokwe South Districts as well as other neighbouring communities.

Gokwe Mapfungautsi Member of Parliament Tawanda Karikoga said they were grateful to the government for embarking on such a project.

“This area had a bad road network and we used to spend two to three hours to travel from Gokwe North, but we now can spend only 30 minutes. Travelling time has been cut and I also believe that with this new development, business is going to improve, and prices of goods in the community are likely to be reviewed.

“Transport operators are welcome, especially bus companies, because private transporters have been taking advantage of this situation charging exorbitant fares,” Kariokoga said.

Midlands roads engineer Stephen Kamutema said the road will establish alternative access from Gokwe South to Gokwe North after the Semame road was severely damaged.

“The scope of work for the total length is 80km, which includes re-graveling and construction of washed away structures and is expected to be completed in two weeks’ time,” he said.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube said government embarked on the project after being advised that Gokwe North is no longer accessible.

“Today we are pleased to observe that 80km of this road will be rehabilitated so that motorists and other road users who were now using Kadoma-Sanyati road can now resort back to this road, which saves time and cut costs,” he said.
