Harare, (New Ziana) – The government plans to assess the structural strength and durability of all dams in the country following the collapse of Bandama dam in Chipinge recently due to heavy rains.
This was said by Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister, Vangelis Haritatos after visiting the collapsed dam in Chipinge.
“This proactive approach aims to identify potential vulnerabilities and take corrective measures to ensure dam safety and prevent catastrophic failures,” he said.
The nationwide assessment of dams will involve a comprehensive evaluation of the structural integrity and condition of each dam, as well as an assessment of the potential consequences of a dam failure, including the risk to human life, property, and the environment.
Furthermore, the assessment will review emergency action plans and ensure that communities downstream of dams are prepared for potential failures. This will involve evaluating the effectiveness of existing emergency response plans and identifying areas for improvement.
Zimbabwe has experienced its fair share of natural disasters, including floods and droughts, which have had devastating effects on communities and the economy. The country’s disaster risk reduction efforts have been ongoing, with initiatives such as the Zimbabwe Disaster Rapid Response Mechanism (ZDRRM) aimed at providing timely and effective responses to disasters.
The ZDRRM has been instrumental in responding to rapid-onset disasters, including floods and storms, and has provided critical support to affected communities. However, the need for a more proactive approach to disaster risk reduction has become increasingly evident.
By conducting a comprehensive assessment of all dams, Zimbabwe can take a crucial step towards preventing future disasters and ensuring the safety of its citizens. This effort is particularly critical in the context of climate change, which is expected to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
Haritatos emphasized that ensuring the safety and reliability of the country’s dams is essential to achieving the critical goal of “Food Security, Everywhere, Everyday”. This proactive approach to dam safety demonstrates the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens, while also ensuring the long-term sustainability of the country’s food systems.
