Govt alive to MDC sabotage tricks – President Mnangagwa

Goromonzi, (New Ziana) – Government will thwart “mischievous activities” by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) intended to divert its focus on improving the lives of ordinary people, and the economy in general, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Saturday.

Instead, he called on Zimbabweans to have unity of purpose and increase productivity, in whatever sphere of the economy they were engaged in, to help attain the goal of transforming the country into an upper middle income economy by 2030.

Speaking at the close of the ruling Zanu PF party’s annual conference,
President Emmerson Mnangagwa said it was only possible for Zimbabwe to
achieve Vision 2030 if people were united, and “keep their eyes on the ball.”

“The January nonsense and periodic mischievous activities by the opposition elements, such as those we witnessed this year, must be nipped in the bud,” he said, referring to MDC-instigated riots at the beginning of the year in which six people were killed.

“Never again shall we allow the loss of precious lives of our countrymen to feed the agenda of a notorious few,” said President Mnangagwa.

“Every citizen must keep their eyes on the ball, and the ball is productivity, the ball is unity, the ball is peace and the ball is harmony.”

The MDC, which disputes – without leg to stand on – its defeat in last
year’s elections, has been organising street marches against the
government across the country, most of which have turned violent.

It lost a court petition against the results of the election, its last
legal avenue for redress, and has now resorted to street protests.

Despite these leading to violence and deaths, the party has vowed to
continue with the marches.

President Mnangagwa said these were gimmicks by the MDC and its foreign
sponsors to divert government attention from its promising reforms, both economic and political, which the authorities expect to usher in a stable, prosperous Zimbabwe in coming years.

“The Zimbabwe we want is possible, victory is certain,” he said.

He called for discipline, transparency, and selfless leadership in both
the party and government, and slammed laziness, greed and corruption.

“In government, those charged with the responsibility of implementing
programmes must deliver. Those who refuse to change and have been slowing down government programmes will be changed,” warned President Mnangagwa.

He called on ruling party members to continue to recruit new cadres in
readiness for the next general elections in 2023.

The conference ran under the theme: “Mechanise, modernise and grow the economy towards vision 2030” and over 5 000 delegates attended.
