Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwean school learners will be in class for a total of 185 days this year, and break for a combined 82 days over three terms, the government said on Tuesday in a revised school calendar.

The school calendar, which was due to begin on January 10, had been deferred indefinitely by the government due to a rise in Covid-19 cases.

The schools will now re-open on Monday next week, following easing of Covid-19 infections.

According to the revised calendar, students will be in class for 45 days from February 7 to April 7 for the first term, while the second term will last 69 days, stretching from May 3 to August 4.

The third term, which will be the longest with 71 learning days, will start on September 5 and end on December 8.

There will be no exeat weekends throughout the 2022 school calendar.

The government, through the ministries of education and health, has made extensive preparatory work for the re-opening of schools, ensuring educational facilities met regiment World Health Organisation Covid-19 prevention protocols.

Common Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures (STOs) have been developed for all schools, and these will be strictly enforced.

“Each school is also mandated by the SOPs to appoint a gender-balanced team of school health coordinators whose duty is to manage minor health-related cases at school level,” the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education said.

Next year, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the first term of 2023 is expected to start on Monday, January 9.
