Harare (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa is on Sunday expected to pronounce government’s position regarding a possible extension or lifting of the nation-wide Covid-19 lockdown.
Zimbabwe completes its 21 day lockdown on Sunday, having instituted it in late March as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19.
Most countries which are still battling the disease including England, France, Italy, India and South Africa have extended their initial lockdown periods as cases continued to increase.
With Zimbabwe completing its three week lockdown, experts have warned that a hasty return to normalcy would be detrimental to the fight against the deadly disease.
Zimbabwe currently has 24 Covid-19 cases including three deaths and two recoveries.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services permanent secretary Nick Mangwana said President Mnangagwa would make a statement to the nation on the lockdown on Sunday.
“Regarding the question of whether the lockdown will be extended or
not, and if extended what shape that will take, we would like to advise that an announcement will be made tomorrow (Sunday),” he wrote on twitter.
China successfully battled the disease by enforcing strict lockdowns in affected regions while countries such as Italy have started recording progress in curbing new infections as a direct result of the lockdowns.
