THE newly elected Gwanda Mayor, Councillor Thulani Moyo, has promised to deliver
city status for the provincial capital.
In an interview, the Mayor said his task is four-fold; rebrand, rebuild, reunite and re-
align the mining town which used to be exemplary in cleanliness and crime-free.
He also emphasised the need for information sharing and engagement on service
    delivery.
“I am not here to warm up the seat or for luxury nor here for picnics, but I am a
people’s servant, who is prepared to work.
“My President Emmerson Mnangagwa always says, no one will do as he pleases in
    Government departments.
“So the same will apply in my town. Public service employees are employed to
perform their duties and serve the interests of the people.
“I therefore challenge everyone to partake in branding of Gwanda so that we can
enjoy our cultural values and mineral resources,” said Mayor Moyo.
He added that part of his targets is to address outstanding issues such as removing
the dumpsite from residential areas to the landfill, which is located on the outskirts of
    the town.
“There are a lot of outstanding issues that need to be addressed such as the
removal of the dumpsite from residential areas, address the billing system, smart
revenue collection that will be done in an accountable and transparent manner.
“Work on infrastructure development that will attract investors, youth recreational
facilities need to be resuscitated as we work towards fighting the war against drugs
    and dangerous substance abuse.
“Already my councillors have started engaging their communities on drug abuse,”
    said the Mayor.
He addressed the town’s critical water challenges that have seen residents going for
    days without running water.
“Our town has outgrown the infrastructure, hence there is need to upgrade the water
treatment plant and work on new water pipes with a bigger carrying capacity,” he
    said.
