Gweru municipality donates to elderly, disabled

Gweru, New Ziana) – The Gweru City Council, through the Mayor’s Cheer Fund, has donated mealie meal and flour to the elderly and disabled residents of the city.

Mayor Josiah Makombe said it was a civic duty of the local authority to look after the less privileged members of the community.

“We have the Mayor’s Cheer Fund which was traditionally held once a year, but we have decided to hold it all year round so we go throughout the city looking for donations so that we give the less privileged. What we have today is not much but we understand it makes a difference for a few days,” he said.

“We have decided to give the elderly and those living with disabilities and we have 46 bags of mealie meal and 46 pockets of flour we will give today,” Makombe said.

The mayor said a number of residents had been to his office asking for food hand outs as they were finding it difficult due to the Covid-19 induced national lockdown.

“We got names from the department of Social Welfare, organisations with disabilities and councillors who live in the community. Some people were begging in the streets, some were vendors and now cannot put food on the table so as a city we should look at each other,” Makombe added.

“The haves should extend a hand to the less privileged.”

He said the municipality intends to also give linen and clothing to the less priviledged in the city.
