Harare, (New Ziana) – Harare residents are facing a dry weekend following a citywide interruption of water supplies from Friday morning to Sunday evening due to urgent repairs and maintenance the city authorities are undertaking at two major water infrastructure facilities.
The disruption, initially scheduled for 14 to 16 August, was postponed to this weekend to allow the City of Harare to carry out works at Morton Jaffray Water Works and Warren Control Pump Station.
“The City of Harare wishes to advise residents and stakeholders that the planned water supply disruption previously scheduled for 14 – 16 August 2026 has been postponed to this week. The disruption will now take place from Friday 21 August 2026 at 6:00 am to Sunday 23 August 2026 at 6:00 pm.
“This is due to a partial shutdown at Morton Jaffray Water Works and a total shutdown of Warren Control Pump Station to allow for urgent repair of leaks and reservoir cleaning at both facilities. Consequently, water supply to the entire City of Harare will be affected during this period,” the City of Harare announced in a statement.
The council has urged residents to store adequate water supplies in clean, covered containers ahead of the shutdown and to conserve water throughout the disruption.
The maintenance programme will include repairing leaks and cleaning reservoirs, with the council saying the facilities must be taken offline to enable the work to be carried out safely and effectively.
The local authority said normal water supplies are expected to resume once the maintenance work is complete.
The latest disruption comes as Harare continues to face persistent challenges with ageing water infrastructure, limited treatment capacity and rising demand driven by the city’s growing population.
