    Harare elects new mayor

    Harare (New Ziana) – The former Chief Secretary to late Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Ian Makone of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) was elected mayor of Harare on Monday.

    Makone received 46 votes to beat Temany Utete of ZANU (PF) who got seven votes in an election presided over by Harare Metropolitan Provincial Secretary, Tafadzwa Muguti.

    Makone of Ward 18 will be deputized by Kudzai Kadzombe of Ward 41 who won the deputy Mayor’s post with 47 votes against Susan Chuma of ZANU (PF) Women’s Quota who got seven.

    Makone who takes over from former mayor and Ward 17 councillor, Jacob Mafume, said his administration will prioritise service delivery while trying to accommodate the views of all stakeholders in the capital city.

    The CCC won 40 seats in the council in the recent harmonised general election with ZANU (PF) grabbing five seats.

    Added to this number are 14 members of the women’s quota of which CCC contributed 10 while ZANU (PF) has four to bring the total number of councillors in 59.
