Harare hit by suspected typhoid

Share

Harare (New Ziana)-Ten suspected typhoid cases have been reported in Harare’s Glen View suburb, the city’s director of Health Services Dr Prosper Chonzi has said.

The suburb is one of the many areas of the city without running water.

“At the moment it’s Glenview close to where the clinic is. People there have been reporting with symptoms that are consistent with typhoid, headaches, fever, temperatures of around 39 to 40 degrees with headaches and abdominal discomfort. So normally those are the typical symptoms of typhoid,” he said.

Dr Chonzi said those who presented themselves to the clinic with typhoid symptoms had been treated.

“Most of them have gone to the clinic and have already received anti-biotics,” he said.

More suspected cases were reportedly detected in Norton, a dormitory town, west of the capital.

Residents associations have on previous occasions blamed disease outbreaks on water shortages, raw sewer spillages and uncollected garbage.

The associations have also accused city fathers and senior council officials of milking council coffers dry by demanding hefty salaries and allowances.
