Harare targets to clear litter by year end

Harare (New Ziana)-The City of Harare has set December 31 this year as the deadline by which it would have cleared all the litter in the capital.
A special council meeting held this Tuesday resolved that workers in the Waste Management department would be laid off if they failed to rid the city of rubbish.
The state of refuse collection necessitated the special council meeting.
“It was resolved that City of Harare be cleared of refuse and be clean by 31st December 2022 failure of which appropriate action would be instituted to lay off responsible staff,” reads part of the minutes of the meeting.
The councillors also resolved that financial resources be deployed towards refuse collection.
“Council further stated that resources should be marshalled towards waste management and that Harare was going to be litter-free by 31st December 2022 or relevant staff would be laid off.”
The local authority has since embarked on intensive refuse collection and dumpsites clearance exercise in the Central Business District.
Garbage has been piling in many parts of the city as the local authority was failing to collect it, resulting in illegal dumpsites as residents resorted to dumping waste on indesignated spaces to avoid it piling in their back yards.
Residents have been urging the local authority to come up with mechanisms to clear dumpsites around the city as their right to a clean environment was being violated.
