Harare,  (New Ziana) -The City of Harare has confirmed a bed bug infestation in Mbare high density suburb, and was on Monday expected to begin spraying affected areas starting in Matererini and Matapi Flats.

In a statement on Sunday, the City’s corporate communications manager Stanley Gama said the infestation was being taken seriously.

“The City teams will start spraying on Monday at Mbare Matererini and Matapi Flats. Residents in the areas mentioned should prepare and cooperate with our teams starting early morning,” he said, adding the exercise was aimed at reducing the bed bug population and prevent further spread.

In addition to spraying, the City will raise awareness among residents on the factors that contribute to infestations, such as overcrowding, as well as provide tips on ways to avoid and control the spread of bed bugs.

“Community volunteers are going to be required for optimum spraying coverage,” Gama said, adding that spraying alone will not be enough to eradicate the problem.

“Bed bugs hide in small crevices on beds, sofas, wardrobes, walls, etc., thus regular physical cleaning is required where chemicals can’t reach,” he explained.
