Mutare (Pungwe News-New Ziana)- A 77-year old man from Dangamvura high density died while two other pedestrians were injured on Monday after they were hit by a haulage truck whose brakes had failed at the roundabout near the Sakubva market along Chimanimani road.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said the deceased, Sylanus Nkomo of Dangamvura, died on admission at the Mutare Provincial Hospital.

Inspector Kakohwa identified the injured as Phillip Mudaniso (38) of Chisamba and Moses Masiasi (34) of New Zororo in Sakubva high density suburb who he said were treated and discharged after their conditions were certified stable.

The Freitliner truck, which is owned by Dogfin Trading Company, was being driven by Fredrick Katupira (36) of Glen Norah in Harare.

“The accident occurred on January 6 around 12:30 pm. The truck lost brakes near Pickn’Pay near Sakubva when the driver reached the roundabout. He tried to turn left and he hit a ditch. Three pedestrians who were on the road side were also hit,” said Insp Kakohwa.

He urged drivers to exercise extreme caution when driving.

This is the second accident to happen at the same spot in less than four months.

“This is the second accident that has occurred at the Sakubva roundabout in less than four months and claimed the life of a pedestrian. We urge road users to be more cautious when driving to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” Insp Kakohwa said.
