Harare (New Ziana) – Coal-fired Hwange Power Station is Zimbabwe’s electricity generation mainstay, contributing more than 75 percent of the country’s total generation during the second quarter of 2024, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) has said.

In its report on the 2024 second quarter of electricity generation, ZIMSTAT said Hwange produced 1 939.9GWh of electricity, representing 75.9 percent of total power generated while the Kariba Hydro Power Station whose generation is affected by low water level in the huge man-made lake, chipped in with 509.9GWh.

Independent Power Producers (IPPs) weighed in with 4.3 percent of the country’s total power generation.

The country imported 515.4GWh of electricity, a 2 percent increase on the first quarter when 504.4GWh of electricity was imported. Hydro Carbora Bassa and EDM of Mozambique contributed 22 percent of the import each respectively, Zambia’s ZESCO 20 percent, ESKOM of South Africa 33 percent while the Southern African Power Pool contributed 2 percent.

“The Index of Electricity Generation for 2nd quarter 2024 was 101.5, reflecting a quarter-on-quarter percentage increase of 13.8 from 89.2 in 1st quarter 2024.  The 2nd quarter 2024 index reflects a year-on-year increase of 13.2 percent when compared to 89.7 recorded in 2nd quarter,” said the ZIMSTAT report.

The total volume of electricity distributed during the 2nd quarter of 2024 was 2135.7GWh. This reflected a percentage increase of 5.4 when compared to 2026.4GWh distributed in 1st quarter 2024.

The volume of electricity exported in 2nd quarter 2024 was 104.7GWh, a 17.1 percent increase from 89.4GWh exported in 1st quarter 2024.
