Hwange – A man from Dingani Village in Hwange has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the rape of his 12-year-old relative, in a case that has shocked the local community.

The offence occurred on New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2025, when the accused allegedly lured the minor to his residence in Dete under false pretences.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the man asked the child to bring her mother’s cellphone, claiming he needed assistance with WhatsApp. Upon her arrival, he took advantage of the situation and sexually assaulted her.

The court heard that the offender threatened the minor after the incident, warning her not to disclose what had happened.

Despite the intimidation, the child later confided in her mother, leading to a confrontation within the family and the subsequent reporting of the matter to the police. Authorities acted swiftly, resulting in the suspect’s arrest and prosecution.

The Hwange Magistrates’ Court described the crime as a serious breach of trust, noting that children rely on close family members for protection and safety.

The 18-year custodial sentence sends a strong message about the gravity of sexual offences against minors and underscores the importance of safeguarding children within communities.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has urged families to remain vigilant, protect children from harm, and report all cases of abuse to law enforcement details.
