THE Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Dr.
Jenfan Muswere, says his ministry will leave no stone unturned in fostering ICT growth
across Government ministries.
The Government has identified the digital economy as one of the key economic growth areas
to achieve the national commitment of elevating the country.
Minister Muswere said this as he handed over 160 desktop computers to the Minister of
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Professor Paul Mavima on Wednesday.
Earlier, Professor Mavima told journalists that most of the services in his ministry “are still
paper based in this era of digital revolution”.
“As Government we have identified the digital economy as one of the key economic growth
areas to achieve our national commitment of elevating the country to be a nation of
sustainable growth whilst ensuring fair and equitable distribution of resources across income
groups, ethnicities and regions.
“To that end, we have recognised the need to empower public sector employees with ICT
tools, skills and competences through the donation of ICT equipment,” he said.
According to Professor Mavima, the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare
needs a lot of computers for all of its four technical departments – the Department of Social
Development, Disability Affairs, Labour and Administration, and Employment Service and
Promotion.
He said the donation of computers came at the right time when they needed to enhance and
widen the spectrum of Government services offered online.
“My ministry has embraced the thrust to digitalize Government services as outlined in NDS1.
“The NDS1 identifies ICTs as one of the key enablers in achieving Vision 2030 and in this
view and considering what we have to do, the application of Information Technology is no
longer an option, but a vital tool for digital based service delivery,” he said.
According to Dr. Gift Machengete, POTRAZ Director-General, apart from donating to the
Ministry of Labour, they have also donated computers and connectivity to the Zimbabwe
Republic Police as part of the e-government programme.
