Illegal settlers around Great Zimbabwe Monuments ordered to leave

Masvingo (New Ziana) -Vice President Kembo Mohadi on Thursday ordered people who have illegally settled in the vicinity of the Great Zimbabwe Monuments in Masvingo to immediately vacate the area.

“I am told that there are people who are encroaching on the boarders of the Great Zimbabwe, our national shrine. I am saying to you now the chiefs, the traditional leaders and the leadership in Masvingo that these settlements that are encroaching should be removed forthwith,” he said.

VP Mohadi was speaking during belated World Habitat Day commemorations held at Nemamwa Growth Point, near the world heritage site.

The commemorations were held under the theme: Housing for All – A Better Urban Future.

VP Mohadi commissioned over 200 residential stands developed by the Masvingo Rural District Council at the growth point.

He handed over three residential stands for free to persons with disabilities.

The Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities in partnership with the council developed the 223 residential stands whose servicing has been completed.

“It is good that this year’s World Habitant Day commemorations coincide with the commissioning of residential stands here in Nemamwa, Masvingo. This planned residential area is yet another milestone in the leadership of His Excellency E.D Mnangagwa. It marks a departure from the era of land barons and the associated parasitic culture,” said VP Mohadi.

He said the government was commitment to the establishment of lawful settlements and doing away with land barons and unplanned settlements.

The government has targeted to deliver 200 000 housing units by the year 2023 and a half million units in the coming 10 years as it seeks to significantly reduce the national housing backlog which is estimated beyond 1.5 million.
