Mushagashe-The fourth edition of the Intra-Ministerial Sports Gala organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development has officially begun at Mushagashe Vocational Training Centre in Masvingo, bringing together staff from provinces across Zimbabwe for a week of sporting competition, wellness and professional engagement.
The week-long event, which runs until Friday, has drawn participants from provincial and district offices, research stations and training institutions under the ministry. Competitors are taking part in football, netball, volleyball, pool and tug of war, with teams battling for honours while strengthening relationships that support their day-to-day operations in the agricultural sector.
Beyond competition, the Intra-Ministry Games have become an important platform for improving communication and collaboration among workers who are often stationed in remote rural areas. Agricultural extension officers, engineers, irrigation specialists and administrative staff are using the gathering as an opportunity to share experiences, exchange ideas and build networks that improve service delivery to farming communities.
Deputy Director for Gender Mainstreaming, Inclusivity and Wellness in the ministry, Ms Niki Gundidza, said the sports gala aligns with the Public Service Commission of Zimbabwe’s broader drive to enhance employee wellness and strengthen workplace unity across Government departments.
“These games are an important part of promoting workplace wellness, inclusivity and staff cohesion across the ministry,” she said. “Many of our workers operate in demanding environments, particularly those based in rural areas, so initiatives like this help reduce stress and encourage healthy lifestyles.”
She added that the event also supports gender inclusivity by ensuring equal participation of men and women in sporting activities, while creating an environment where workers from different backgrounds can interact on equal footing.Participants have also noted that the sports gala plays a role in improving morale and motivation, particularly for field officers who spend long periods away from their families while delivering critical agricultural services such as farmer training, crop inspections and livestock support.
For extension workers and technical staff, the games provide a rare opportunity to meet colleagues from other provinces face-to-face, strengthening professional relationships that are often maintained remotely during the year. This interaction helps improve coordination during national agricultural programmes such as input distribution, irrigation development and farmer support initiatives.
The annual event has steadily grown into a key fixture on the ministry’s calendar, with increased participation reflecting the value placed on employee well-being and teamwork. Organisers say the gala not only promotes physical fitness but also strengthens unity within the ministry, ultimately contributing to improved productivity and more effective service delivery to Zimbabwe’s farming communities.
